FOWLR or Reef??

Buying LOTS of RO water can be very expensive.

100gal times about 40-50 cents per gal, plus water changes, plus the constant driving to and from place to get 100gal (gas in the US is not cheap), and to buy more for water changes....WOW..........

Arizona has Water & Ice or similar stores on just about every corner. You might look around for similar stores in your area. Ours generally have pretty good quality water and most will test the TDS in your presence.

a good RO/DI unit is worth the money, i think youll end up spending way more money the other route, as well as lots and lots of time.

The cost of an RO/DI unit ($100-150) can be justified pretty quickly by the time you add the amount of hassle it is to go get water at the store in time, gas, and effort.

If you are going to keep a "reef" type tank, it is not going to be a big part of your investment anyway

i get my water from the "water Island" machine at my local Dominicks grocery store. I'm not sure if theres any by you but I've seen the same machines at 3 other chains. Just make sure the water quality sticker they put on there to show testing is updated.

with a 100G tank, I think an RO/DI is a good move.

Figure you are going to change at least 10G a week of water and so at 3.50 a week plus maybe $2 worth of gas and 40 minutes time to and from.... You have $5 of real money in the process every week plus salt. It still costs money to process your own water but $2 a week for water is better than 5... So figure a ROI at maybe a year? and the time and hassle savings is immense

I have to agree with Randall_James. I only have a 55g, and I was buying water from my lfs. After about 2 months of going to the store every week and buying water for 50 cents per gallon, I did the math and saw that I would more than pay for a RO/DI unit within the year. Now I make my own water, and it is so much easier. It is definitely worth the investment to get one.
Just my $.02

Several sponsors here on RC sell RO/DI units in the $150 range that are very good. The very best unit sold today is only $269. You will more than recoup that investment in no time at all considering the single largest component of a reef system or any other aquarium is water.
