Is this normal?

Hi everyone,

I went down to grab a few gallons of saltwater from my Brute container this morning, and found that the water was VERY slightly cloudy, with a thin white film on the surface of the water. I'm using Instant Ocean salt.

The water is constantly being aerated by a Rio pump (I know, I know, Rios are bad, but I had it on hand, I'll be changing it out soon). I was concerned that the film might be oil that leaked out from the Rio, but there is no foul smell from either the Rio itself or the water, the Rio isn't hot to the touch, and when I opened up the housing on the pump, it looked brand new.

So is this surface film just a little bit of salt that didn't get mixed, or...? Is it normal? I'd appreciate any opinions, especially since I will need to use some saltwater today.

A few batches of I/O have been known to do that.. Also, if you add too much salt at once, it'll do it..

I'd say make sure you have good mixing and surface movement along with proper heating and salt/water combo and you should be ok..

Thank you! So should I avoid getting any of the film into the tank, or is it a non-issue?
