ordered live rock.
Just orderd 100 lbs live rock and 50 lbs dry base rock at lfs for my 120 gal fwlro tank. while ther I noticed some very nice pieces of lava rock there. LFS says it is ok to use lava rock in with the live rock. IS he correct?

You should have got your live rock online would have been cheaper and probly better depending on where you rodered it
dont know about the lave rock though i read some thing from hawaii on a site and they were selling lave "BASR ROCK" i assume its okay since they were selling it at there online store |

Well, the consensus is that lava rock is bad for tanks. It can leach out metals and other minerals that don't belong in a tank. Just do a search here and search for lava rock and you'll see LOTS of threads on it. I had a couple of pieces in my tank, but pulled them out. My tank has never looked and 'acted' better, so I would stay away from it. Just go with dead base rock and lots of lr

well hawaii is full of reefs and nothing but lave rock so you would think it was okay but who knows

the lava rock in hawaii has been in the ocean for a long time and it poured up out of the ocean most of the chemicals that leach out did so when it was formed there. lava rock you buy in a store was probably pick up off the ground and hasn't spent a thousand years in the ocean. but this is just a guess.

The lava rock they sell at the LFS that is light in color is perfectly fine to use. It is basically limestone, its called tufa rock. The dark kind is the kind that may or may not leach metals.
