MH Lighting question??

I have a 55 gallon reef. I'm building a hood and need to know what the best hight for the 175 MH bulbs would be?? Also what's the best way to burn them in?? They didn't come with any glass to cover the bulbs from any possible splashing, should I add a piece of glass to protect the bulbs?? Thanks for your help...

I have 2 175's about 6" from the water, I never realy have a big problem with splashing, although you may get some mist type splash, but that not a big idea, 2 14k's they turn on at about 11"30 and turn off at about 9:45! hope this helps. good luck
