Hmmm. That article claims that mangroves, as they grow, will make protein skimming "obsolete." I don't know if I'd go that far... In my opinion, they do provide a small amount of natural filtration, but they're more used for the coolness factor. Example: "Check out these sweet plants I'm growing in my 'fuge." I'd definitely never consider them on the same level as a quality skimmer. But they are pretty cool little things.

I've got a few floating in my display. Here's what Calfo says about them:

Mongrove article

"For all my love for keeping these plants, however, I must admit that they truly are not comparatively efficient nutrient export mechanisms. It's a very simple matter. Growth overall is slow, and leaf drop is often concurrent with new leaf growth. The net gain of mass from these plants is, in fact, dismally slow, and leaf drop alone (as a vehicle for nutrient export) cannot compare to a vigorous Chaetomorpha or Gracilaria based vegetable filter."

i just like the way they look. i took a cheap drink holder for the window of a car, added some live rock rubble, put a mangrove shoot in and put it in the back of my display. as the roots grow down into the tank you can see different things hiding out in it. becareful of what fish you have in the tank, my tangs kept eating the new root growth.

I've thought a few times about putting one or two in my hang-on 'fuge, but only because it'd be something cool, different, and new to show the people who sometimes take a quick look at my tank when they come over.
