Best Place for the Tank itself?

I was wondering what your experiences have been regarding buying the tank itself. Lfs, Internet or some sort of distributor? Where have you purchased your tanks?

I am looking for a 120RR. I really like the Oceanic Tech series but would settle for a standard AGA.

So where have you found your best deals (on new tanks only)?

Thanks,

TenPercenter

It really depends. Getting a good deal on a tank is knowing where to look and being at the right place at the right time.

Stores are generally not the cheapest places to get tanks. But you can find good deals about them.

I've gotten my tanks used. It's the one item that doesn't really wear out, and if it did, you can tell right away that it had. On the other side, the tank is not the bulk of the cost for an aquarium, so getting a good one wont disappoint you.

Cant buy tanks off the internet just stands. In my opinion you dont know what the pervious owner might have done to it or accidents they might have had. Better to spend the extra on a new tank with a warranty then postings in 3 months your 120rr leaked and what do you do now.

IMO the tanks is the cheapest part of this hobby. I bought all my tanks at LFS. This way if I have problems I can go to them. They do not make a big profit on tanks (especially is special order), so that is what I did.

On used tanks-- If you doing FO or FW it would be OK, but if going reef I would make sure the tank has NEVER been medicated with copper.

If you buy a used one try and get one that is a whole setup already running. that way you see everything working and you can save a whole lot of money.

I'm inclined to disagree with JamesJR. No offense meant, however.

I bought a whole setup. At least I thought it was. Big mistake. Take the time. Do the research. Buy your gear a little bit at a time and enjoy the whole development and set up of your own tank and reef. Just my two cents anyway.

TenPercenter,
I have to ask about your screen name!! In the Marine Corps we have a phrase regarding "that ten percent!" Just curious.

Well do your research and use common sense. You can get screwd from a store, online retailer or individual selling a tank. Anyone can give you the wrong end of the stick.

I would have to say check your local thrifties for a tank, you can get great tanks used alot of the times. You can also check craigslist.com. I got a almost brand new 100 gal truvu aquarium for next to nothing.

You may want to find a local club. They usually have experienced members and no the best places to buy stuff.
