skimmers skimmers everywhere but none that are quiet and work

hiya everyone, its been a while since my last confession.. oops wrong place...

i recenly sold my deltec mce600 as it started to make an aweful noise, vibrating and buzzing sound, so i contacted deltec and they sent me a new impeller and dampening stuff, but still loud and was not really working that well, it was only working for a year with regular cleaning.

now i am unsure which one to replace it with, i am in the process of getting a sump made so a new skimmer would be nice.

something of similar size that works really well and low low noise.

ive looked at aqua medic, v2, and some others even thought about making my own but would prolly balls it up.

so anyones suggestions please.

i have 400L to skim.

thanks

My reefcreations are awesome, very high build quality, very power skimmers. www.myreefcreations.com
Aqua C EV series are also awesome skimmers.
www.protienskimmer.com

As you can see, i well over needle wheel skimmers these days, im all about the beckett and spray injection skimmers. They have worked VERY well for me. I dont care to much about the pump that runs them. There both much quiter then NW's. (at least the ones i have tried, (ASM, EURO REEF, SuperSkimmers)

I run the EV180, and the MRC MR-2R reciruculating model. These are both on a 200 gallon, If i had room for a EV400 i would have bought that. The MRC is turning out to be one hell of a skimmer. Im in MRC love right now. Powerfull, quiet, and for under $700 (with pumps) its hard to beat. Im getting ready to sell my EV180, i dont need two skimmers. I would love to hang on to it, but i cant afford to just keep it in storage for a rainy day.

Hi,
What pump do you use on the EV 180?
Thanks,
Frank

while MCR are good skimmers you said quit. those skimmers noise depends on the pump you get to drive them. I dont like the Aqua c at all (unstable foam head and overflow issues and foam scum collecting in the skimmer body & leaky cups)

The ATI BM 200 or 150 would work Great for you not good, Great. As quit as they come, and more air than most any other skimmer in their size range. and about 18-27 watts.

also a H&S 150 would be great. and or tunze 9015 will complete some good choices for quit skimmers

OK, I LOVE, LOVE my MRC2 skimmer, but no way is it quiter than a NW, pinwheel, whatever you want to call it, skimmer.

I have an Aqua-C EV-120 with a Mag 5. LOUD is an understatement. The skimmer makes a loud whooshing sound and the pump rattles as well. I replaced it with a Tunze 9010 which is very close to silent (less noise than the inflow to my sump) and works quite well. And only uses 21w to boot.

I would not be looking at an injection skimmer if noise was a concern.

I'll echo some of the others, Tunze, H&S, Deltec are very quiet and should be available in the UK. Not sure of ATI availability.

If you want quiet, look at Aqua medic. I couldn't even tell that my old turboflotor was even on and it skimmed like crazy. Plenty of power for an 80 gallon tank and no noise whatsoever. If you resort to a huge beast of a skimmer, it will be noisy no matter what. You just can pump that much water and pull that much air and have it be silent. I just don't htink it's possible. So it's a trade off. If noise is your biggest concern, then just go with a smaller skimmer.

To each there own? I guess thats why there are so many choices on the market. I do what works for me, and meets my noise tolerance. There quiet to me, more quiet then a venturi sucking air all the time. Mabye its the low resonance of the big pump vs the high resonance of the air venturi. Maybe im going deaf. Im not going to debate skimmers. This is my opinion, thats all.

I have 2 EV-120's, both running with Mag 5's. They are both nearly silent. I can't imagine what's going on with yours, Bruce.

Dunno why it was so loud but it was. I had no complaints with how well it skimmed, when I got it adjusted correctly, though. Perhaps the particular mag 5 I have was the source of most of the noise, aside from the whooshing sound of the air intake? In any case, The tunze is quiet, not fussy about height of water in sump, uses less space and uses less power.
