Guys I am looking for a new feed pump for my Deltec AP600 external skimmer which needs a flow rate of 160 gallons an hour. The skimmer is located on the side of the tank which requires a hose about 4 1/2 would a mag 3 be okay even with the loss head pressure or would I better off in getting a eheim 1250 which is rated for over 300 gallons an hour which has suppose much better head pressure?

Scott

While they may use more power than others they last for ever. I know 4 other people who run mags as their return pumps for years and have never had a problem. One guy hasen't cleaned his out in 2 years in a high demand SPS system and it still runs fine.

I was using a Mag 2 to feed an APF600 and was pushing about 200gph after head loss (I do all of my testing in a bathtub.) I changed to an Eheim with a higher rating than the Mag2 in hopes I could push a little more water through, but it only gives me 210 gph after head loss.

I would recommend either one of these; my preference is for the Mag as it has 1/2 inch threaded outputs. According to one of the previous posts, the larger Eheims accept threaded connectors; I own 2 of the smaller ones and they do not.

How much vertical distance? Horizontal doesn't affect head except for some friction loss. mag3 or the 1250 would both work an need to be valved down. A MJ1200 or even a MJ900 may do it. What are you using now?

I was using a mj1200, the thing that its not made made for this much vertical head pressure I am barely getting the water level at the bottom of the bayonett of my skimmer where the water needs to be for 160 gallons an hour.

Here is the photo of how much vertical head pressure we are talking about.

I would think a mag3 or Eheim 1250 would be more than enough and would need to be dialed back.

I rate Ocean Runner pumps from AquaMedic as number 1 for submersible pumps. I have 3 of them working great and one newer Mag 2 that is so noisy I am about ready to pitch it. Its on its second impeller and is still a POS.
