Do I need to see the sand?

In my never ending quest for information regarding my future aquarium, I've been researching a deep sand bed. I don't want to start yet another pros and cons thread. I've seen a few of those. If I do a smaller tank, I won't do one. If I do a larger one (looking likely) I will probably do one. I like jawfish!

So my question. How necessary is it for me to actually observe what is happening within the sandbed? I don't find the side view of the sandbed particularly attractive, so I was considering painting the bottom 3.5" or so of the tank. Of course I wouldn't want to do anything permanent if regular observation was key to good sandbed health.

Personally, I don't think it is all that crucial. Most stands are open under the tank. You can get a peak at whats going on that way.

I agree with serpentman in that I don't think its all that cruical either. What's going to happen to your dsb is going to happen the same way wheather you see it or not. Plus, what would you do differently if your dsb is screwing up? Wouldn't you take the same actions in either case?

I don't really know since I never had one, but logic says that it shouldn't make a difference, I think.

From reading , a dsb looks like a good idea if you have it working right. And if you want jawfish, alot of them need it anyway.
