Re: what type of light

"I just added a refugium to my tank and was wondering what type of light "

I use a natural daylight 6500K 26w curley bulb from home depot

"and when should I run oppisite of main tank"

Now

"and how long does it take for the bacteria to harden the sand up"

What do you mean "harden the sand" ?

sand gets hard after time from the calcium in the tank and deposits are left in the sand making it (HARD) as you say.

There was a HUGE thread on this bulb a few years ago. Many people reported great growth, and low wattage. I've used it for 2 years. The 5100K bulb is the one you want.

"sand" does not get hard. Crushed coral substrates get hard when the calcium in them precipitates and causes it to basically become concrete. If you have sand sifting critters in your substrate then you should have no trouble with any hardening.

It would have eventually settled down after the bacteria colonized it, but since you didn't have a problem, you're set!

sand will get hard after a few years under heavier rocks and will usually attatch a clump on the rock so maybe this is where the hard sand comes from.
