I used natural seawater in Hawaii. If you can get a clean source it works great. I got mine from a place that had a pipe that went over 100 yards off shore and then it was ran through a filter. If you are too close to shore you have a high likelihood of bad runoff (pollution, chemicals, oils, etc.) and you have a chance of getting undesired organisms in your tank. The tank I had in Hawaii was very healthy and most of the stuff inside was local, so using natural seawater seemed like the best idea possible there.

i work for a lfs in south florida, my boss has been using natural seawater for over 15 years with no trouble, especially in reefs, if your worried about using it, get a uv steralizer and just zap anything in the water, regardless of what anyone says, you cannot replicate the compostition of seawater and thats whats so nice if you live close to a source, its free, and better then anything else. but you need to make sure its collected at the high incoming tide, outgoing tides are full of fertalizers, chemicals and toxins. be careful, the water should be very very clear and have a slight blueish tint,

good luck and happy reefing
