ID with pic and a question

what are these white things attached to my SEIO magnet base. they are new and I cant tell if they are animal, plant, or just gunk.

and my question is I have been fighting hair algae like lots of people tonight I tried using a toothbrush on the bad rocks while they are still in the tank. it worked great but does the hair algae loose in the tank that my skimmer doesn't mop up cause worse problems.??

Those are Pineapple/Barrel Sponges. They're harmless. I'm not sure if the loose HA will cause problems, but I would siphon it out just to make sure.

yeah I was just testing tonight with the brush. I plan to do it now each time I do a water change so I can suck up most of the crap.

Good news on the sponges I had not had any yet..
