Question Should I drill new 125 glass for overflow and how?

First I am thinking of buying a 125gal 6' glass tank from a lfs gone out of business. It has an oak stand and the top glass and light which I won't be using. Is $300 a good deal for this aquarium?

Second, I am thinking of drilling the tank for an internal overflow rather than use the hang on the back type overflow box. Is this a good idea and if so what is the best way to do this. And should I use one or two drain pipes?

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

The price seems ok, a new AGA 125 is $329 on the web and thats drilled. So you may want to shop the web as this already will have the overflows built in. In order to drill that tank the glass cannot be tempered (bottom) glass. I would go with two corner overflows, with two holes each (1" bulkhead and a 3/4" bulkhead) I do not recall the hole size for those fittings, can search the web. You will need to have a glass shop do this as it is not a DIY project. You can make your own overflow boxes with 6" PVC pipe silconed into the corners, with teeth cut in the top. Check out the DIY forum.

That being said, I would save the hassle and go online a purchase a AGA 125 reef ready for $329

good luck
Ron

Thanks for the input! I will do some shopping and see what I come up with.

If anyone else has any comment on this, please feel free to pour it out here.

It's nice that it comes with the stand, so I would try to talk him down on price a bit. You can then add a calfo overflow (better surface skimming)and simply run the plumbing through the back. (jmo)

You drill the back, not the bottom. Not hard to do.
