water temp

How much will water temperature affect the cycling of a new tank? The heater I planed on using isn't working. I have to wait till next Friday to buy a new one.
the tank has been up 14 days with live sand and 7 with live rock. total being 14 days.

Brown algae is starting to form on the sand.

so far
temp 76 f
ph 8.2
nitrites 0
nitrates 5.0
ammonia .25

Not sure about how much but stability of parameters is def. something your trying to achieve. Are your temps staying around 76? How much swing are you getting?

At a guess i would say if it gets too low or too high or if it fluctuates too much then some of the bacteria etc that you are trying to grow (can't think of a better word for it!) will die. If you keep the room temp warm them that will help to keep the tank at a stable temp

You might lose some of the organisms on the live rock, and the change in temperature might kill off some of the microbial flora.

I don't think 76 F is much of a problem. I'd worry if the temperature were in the 60s or so, I guess.

76 will be fine. As long as it doesn't fluxuate to bad thing will be ok.
