What kind of algae is this?

Need to ID this algae, it's purple and has a brushy texture to it.It actually looks nice but is this a problem algae and what kind is it?

Freaky. You sure it's an algae? Looks kind of like some sponges I've seen. LFS had a rock that was covered with a baby blue sponge.

I was told that it could be a Dictyota sp. which is an algae and not a sponge.There are many sp. of Dictyota algae out there, it's finding the right name for mine and if this could become a problem algae though for now it's looks nice.

is it hard to the touch or soft? any chance of getting a closer pic?

It's hard to the touch but not to the point that it's brittle and breaks when touched.

dont know. really need a closer pic to say anything for sure. im thinking its a type of coralline alage, but again i cant really tell. take a look at this page http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...48#post8907848 and see if anything looks like it.

My guess is Amphiroa cryptarthrodia could be Jania rubens really hard to say.
