ASM vs Octopus
Which is a better skimmer? I've gotten mixed reviews from the research I've done so far, and was hoping to get a definitive answer with some help.
I'm looking at the G3 or the NW 200. I can get a G3 shipped for $255 or $210 plus shipping for the Octopus. |

I'm planning on the recirc octopus myself.
I'm hoping I make the right decision. I have never run one comparitively though so I can't vote in good conscience. |

asmskimmers.com just switched to carrying only the octopus line. I don't know why, but, see for yourself.

I use a G3 and it works very well, however if I were buying a skimmer today and were to pick between the two it would be the NW200. I dont think you can go wrong with an 8 inch diameter skimmer for less money.

That's the exact site I was looking at that really prompted my curiosity between the two skimmers. I didn't understand how a site called asmskimmer.com, does not sell asm skimmers, but rather octopus?
Can the Octopus skimmers be modified the same as the asm skimmers are? In particular the recirc mod. |

What it comes down to is this: If you want to compare an Octopus to an ASM, compare the G3 to the NW150. You're talking $250+ vs $150. Add in the fact that the Octopus is cell cast acrylic (not even deltec can claim that) vs the extruded PVC, and pulls more air than the ASM, and its a no brainer. The fact that the NW200 is STILL cheaper than the ASM G3 is absurd, because it'll spank a G4. AFAIC, it'd be worth debating ASM vs RO if the G3 was $129, and the G4 was $169. With the current pricing structure, its not.

So is there a lot of opinion on the Recirc Needlewheel skimmers vs the standards? I see that the cheapest recirc is about $100 more than the NW-150 but the recirc is rated as having a lower capacity.
