What Makes Mushrooms Melt?

My blue mushrooms (and one green ric that was touching
them )have melted.

This was yesterday when it started . This morning the ones
on the right were shrunk and covered with the "mucus"
seen on the left. When I got home from work they were
almost all gone. I removed rock from tank and later noticed
the small green ric at left has also melted.

The other ricordia and other shrooms all seem fine (as does
everything).

these blues were one of the oldest rocks in my tank.

Only change in water this week is add of ca.

Any thoughts?

Are you suggesting it's high? It was 375 when I treated.

Calcium has nothing to do with discoma or ricordea mushrooms (or very little if any at all). These mushrooms do seem to be prone to bacterial infections. Did they touch any other corals in the time before this happened? They can also be affected by alleopathy (chemical warfare) within the tank. Leather corals are some of the more toxic ones. Just ensure you run carbon for in a filter and change it regularly.

I hope you are using RO water?

Have you changed your lighting in any manner. I noticed that when I went from 175MH to 250MH my mushrooms melted and would not grow back.

I've heard of that happening after adding a phosphate pillow to the sump and yanking all of the phosphate out to quickly. It seems that they are prone to any quick drastic water parameter changes.

Temp steady at 79F to 81F
I'm having a senior moment as to product name but
PH held steady.
I checked calcium and it is 410 (an increase of 35 from
before treatment). Could a jump like that do it?

heat will melt them. i know all too well. above 83(depending on the accuracy of the thermometer) will kill some. i don't know which species are more prone to this but some are.

It's like they circulated a little memo saying,
" We will self destruct in 24 hours"

All of that colony nuked and other similar shrooms in tank
are just fine.

Don't know this from experience but I have read (The Conscientious Marine Aquarist) that a lack of iodine can cause mushrooms to melt.

I had read some "anti lugols iodine" posts a couple of
months ago and meant to buy another. I dosed with lugols tonight. I don't think it can hurt.
