135....

How much live rock should I have in there !???!

This is a shot of my tank.....and I am wondering if this is enough LR to combat the green algae growing on the back of the glass !???

In this picture it looks kind of olive brown....on the back glass ! I am running a phosban reactor and I just changed out the media about 3 weeks ago. I don't overfeed so I can't figure out if the amount of LR I have is part of the problem !!!

Help !

I dont think its an LR problem.

Do you use RO, RODI?
When did you last change your bulbs?
How much flow do you have?
Are you dosing anything?

It also looks like that tank may get direct sunlight from the left?

If so this could be the problem w/ the algae.

What are your params at?

If you want to get rid of your hair algae you can always use some mexican turbo snails.

Though you probably can't tell from there...the left side of the tank end is covered by backing ! And the light coming in is actually pretty limited....I just opened it up so I could get a good picture of the algae !!!

Sorry about that ! I meant to add my parameters:

NH3, NO2, NO3, PO4 are all at ZERO !
KH-6*
pH-8.1
Ca-456
SG-1.022

The dKH should be at least 7. Fixing that might help. The SG is very low. I target 1.026-1.027. This article covers all the water parameters:

http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-05/rhf/index.php

The basic guess would that the tank needs about 135 lbs live rock. How much is in there?

I agree with Bertoni. Target your alk at 7-11dkh. SLOWLY raise the salinity and get it up around 1.026. Read the article given.

If you are using the live rock for filtration purposes, then 1-2lb/gallon is a good amount.

The algae issue is probably from excess nutrients. A good quality test kit, like Salifert, will help. Test for nitrates and phosphates. Need to get to the root of the problem to eliminate the hair algae for good.

What do you use for filtration?

i think some more live rock would help your tank take up nutrients
think about a skimmer upgrade

The Hair Algae is not a problem for me. I have just a little bit in my HOB but not in the main tank. The algae is short and green and isn't a problem on the rock just on the back glass !

The filtration is a refugium and also a ASM G2 Protein Skimmer that runs very well and pulls plenty of skimmate !

I think you are moving in the right direction using a phosphate sponge. It would also help to run a mechanical filter and scrape the rear glass. That would catch the loose algae and harvest nutrients. The tank is not stocked all that heavy so the phosphate should be reduced in short order.

So do you think running a Hot Magnum while I scrape the algae would help get rid of alot of the back glass crap growing back there?

Check out the Phosphate levels, I bet they are high

This is the main cause of green algae

Srape away as removing plant life is part of nutrient export.

Okay I have been running a Phosban Reactor for 2-3 months now and I did see an almost immediate reaction from the little bit of hair algae I did have in the tank...it's gone !

I replace my phos media every 6 weeks !
