benthic skate found alive: Seaside OR

A deepsea skate, rescued at the surface. A curious, rarely-seen creature.

Salinity 1.024-6; alkalinity 8.3-9.3 on KH scale; calcium 420; magnesium 1300, temp 78-80, nitrate .2. Ammonia 0. No filters: lps tank. Alk and cal won't rise if mg is low.

Current Tank Info: 105g AquaVim wedge, yellow tang, sailfin blenny,royal gramma, ocellaris clown pair, yellow watchman, 100 microceriths, 25 tiny hermits, a 4" conch, 1" nassarius, recovering from 2 year hiatus with daily water change of 10%.

idk... this makes me think something weird is going on... first the weird shark from the other thread now this and it says its the 2nd one recently... something strange is going on down there...

curious thought, r00onmac. No big seismic disturbance down there, except one a couple of weeks back near Japan, as I recall: I tend to track that sort of thing. This is the Pacific, so there's no question of the Atlantic Conveyor being disrupted...except that the Conveyor is oceans-wide. If temperature levels are being upset in the depths, those of us north of Kansas should invest in parkas, and those of us south better buy shorts and be prepared to be beachfront property.

WOW! Very crazy looking creature. I had never even heard of a skate.

Gundo, they're another word for ray, or a subdivision of the type, member of the shark family, if I recall.

Ya I agree I also think it is weird two deep dwelling fish have come to very shallow waters in the past week. I don't think this the last story we will see about this or another fish.

They're not that rare & their depth range starts about 75 feet. In fact, there's a fishery for them with most of the catch being sent over to Asia. Sightings like this are not uncommon. It's just that for some reason the stories have been picking up on them more.
