Filter floss questions…
Our sump tower has a “tray” built into the top for filter floss. There are holes on the bottom and sides of the tray. I guess the idea is that if the floss gets too restrictive the “overflow” goes up the sides and can still escape. We started out with blue and white floss. Then with the suggestion of a LFS we changed to the finer white stuff which is much more dense. That seemed to filter out more particles but it also “clogged” up very quickly to the point the side holes were taking care of the overflow.
What’s a good brand and spec that works well? We switched back to the blue / white stuff for now. Also is there a good online source for this stuff? Thanks!

You might consider using a sponge filter pad. You can remove one and clean it in a jiffy. That is a good thing as you want to limit biological growth on a mechanical filter media to limit nitrate production.

Ah! I like the idea of a rinse-able sponge filter pad. But where can a 9" x 13" sponge be found?

Are you sure its a spot for filter floss, and not for a normal filter pad.
My sump has a tray on the top for a normal filter pad, and then down below we have cut a sponge in half and placed a layer of filter floss (1 cm compressed) before the return pump.

Maybe I’m mixing up filter floss with filter pad. Right now we are using that blue / white stuff that kinda looks like the inside of air conditioner filters.

FYI, the white stuff that was way too restrictive was the coralife 50 micron stuff:

Tidepool brand has carbon pillows, filter pads with carbon built in and regular (blue/white) filter pads. My LFS carries them and I used to use those. I have since taken all filter pads out of the sump. Just let the rock do what it do.

That is filter pad, Filter floss is basically batting that is inside pillows, works really good to trap stuff tho but must be used very thin. We just purchased the blue/white pad last week from a local LFS, and have had no problems with it. Not sure what the microns are, I think my wife threw the package away. |

aaahhhh... filter pad, not floss,,, I'm going to try to find the 100 micron stuff and see how it works. The 50 micron was way too restrictive and clogged too quickly.
