Overflow
Hi. Having visited my lfs today, I'm rather confused about the info I received regarding a sump I'm hoping to build. I have a 48 x 25 x 20 (L x H x W) and was looking to add a small 18 x 15 x 12 sump, mainly to hide equipment as much as anything. I've already purchased a aqua medic ocean runner 3500 lph to return the water from the sump, but havent a clue on how I'm going to get it there. Is another pump, pumping water from the tank to the sump a good idea? I'm not overly keen on drilling the tank and the support glass around the top of the aquarium is not gonna enable me to have an overflow box. Thanks

Another pump is probably not a real great idea. If you have two pumps, you need to balance their outputs, which may not be easy. Even if they're the same model, they'll probably not produce exactly the same amount of flow.
Also, with 2 pumps, you have 2 mechanical devices that can fail separately, whose performance will degrade separately (meaning even if you tune them at first, one may still overwhelm the other in time as they both gum up at different rates.)

An overflow is the only way to do it. Do not and I repeat do not use a pump to get water from the tank to the sump.
