Questions about stands
Ok, I'm still in the planning stages. My wife has given me the tentative OK to setup the tank in our dining room, provided that it "looks nice". That means both the tank itself as well as the stand and canopy. I think I generally the understand the difference between tanks that are plummed with overflow boxes in them, and ones that have the rear overflow, where it almost looks like a hang-on overflow. With each setup, how do you keep all the plumbing invisible to someone standing beside the tank?
With the more standard overflow setup, I'm under the impression that you have two holes and one runs down to your sump, while the other is your return. In that case, do you have to cut holes in the stand to make room for the PVC pipe? If you go with the rear or external overflow (not sure what's the right term), the PVC is logically going to be running behind the tank. In this case, do you just buy a stand a bit deeper than the tank so that you have room for the PVC to run behind the tank, while still allowing the stand to be flush against the wall? If so, is it possible to hide the pipes and overflow somehow? I'm sorry if that isn't described very well, hopefully someone understands what I'm asking... -Matt |

Yes with a normal "reef ready" setup you have at least two holes in the bottom of the tank that go through the top of the stand into the sump area.

With an external overflow box the tank you need to be farther away from the wall, maybe as much as 6", to allow for pipes to run between the wall and the back of the tank. The pipes will be visible from the side unless you hide them with some sort of cabinetry.
