SCWD stuck?
Is there any way to clean a SCWD or do you just have to replace it?

As far as I know there is no way to open it without cutting it open. You could try running some vinegar and water through it or soaking it. That might remove some of the junk.

yep, just regular white vinegar. If you can get your hands on some muriatic acid (available at most hardware stores) that's what I'd recommend (great for cleaning any sort of calcium deposits, pumps, etc., as well). Dilute 1:10, don't inhale fumes, wear gloves w/ the acid, though.

Soak it for a few hours in straight white vinegar. Take it out, rinse it and blow through it to move the gate and gears to a different position and soak it a few more hours, rinse it and its as good as new.

Sometimes it is more than mineral deposits and objects get stuck in the SCWD.

If any solids get stuck in them all you have to do is reach up inside from the bottom with a dental pick, jeweyers screwdriver or ice pick and rotate the bottom gear back a fraction to clear it and then do the soak in vinegar. I have an old one cut apart and they are pretty darn simple inside.

I have never heard mine in 3+ years of use. I get compliments from fellow reefers on how quiet my system is all the time.

I tried cleaning mine with vinegar but it still does not work. Should I try vinegar again or go with acid?

Stick a small screwdriver or ice pick into the inlet side and rotate the gear and gate a few times and soak it some more. It may have had something jammed in the gears or the switching gate could have been stuck.

Do you guys run yours with the main return or from a dedicated pump?
Currently I running mine from the return from a mag 7 for a 40g. I think with the resistance of the scwd and the head pressure it puts the mag 7 at just about the right flow for the 40g through the sump. |

I use two of them on my 125. 1 is on the main return from the sump running off a Mag 9.5. The other is on a tee off of a sequence dart..

The one that got stuck on me was a main return on a Mag 7 for one year.
