Help w/ Eheim 2227

Can you use different media, like carbon or Purigen or Renew or Phosban in a Eheim 2227 wet/dry filter? I have had it on from my FOWLR days....and feel it is likely it's the source for my nitrate readings (.25 to .5).......BUT....I love the wave action in my tank and hate to throw it out. It fills with water then pushes it back in the tank w/ a surging action creating a nice wave.
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience w/ replacing the ceramic bio balls in these filters w/other things?

Is that a canister filter? I haven't heard of Eheim wet-dry filters. The wet-dry setups can sometimes be used as sumps.

Its a wet/dry canister...it pumps water in, covers the media, then pumps the water back out...thats what makes the nice surging action ....when it comes back into the tank....its very efficient i the first stages of tank set up...it rids you of ammonia & nitrite very quickly, but over time the nitrate levels have increased and then leveled out....i just cnat make them go back down to 0...

You need to do frequent water changes to reduce the nitrate level.

The nitrate problem is common with that type of filter. I'd remove the biological media, over a period of some number of weeks, and use it for carbon and flow. Well, before doing anything else, how much live rock is in the tank? This is the tank with 70 lbs, right?

Yes, it is the tank w/ 70lbs LR. - I do about 7 gal change every 2 weeks....w/ distilled water and instant ocean salt. Do I need to be changing more than that? The live rock is quite mature (most about 3 years old) and beautiful w/ lots of corraline algae.

Water changes are usually not helpful with nitrate problems, because the level bounces back up quickly in most cases. The underlying problem needs to be resolved. This article covers the issue:
