Using a mouse pad to dampen pump noise?

I’ve read that you can use a generic neoprene mouse pad under a return pump to quiet things down. I currently have a wad of filter pad under my Mag 7 but I’m concerned that it might produce nitrates eventually. Is a mouse pad better for this purpose?

Thanks!

I would think a mouse pad would reduce vibrations, yes.
