how to tell Water flow-thru rate of a skimmer.....

I was looking at getting this skimmer from won brothers. but i can't find any info on the flow-thru rate of this skimmer. i plan on using my return pump to run this skimmer and want to make sure my overflows can handle it.

here is the web page.
http://www.wonbrothers.com/product/skimmer/clean200.htm

This will be mine second skimmer which i will be using for ozone/back up. I also have a aqua c remova. This will all be going in my new tank later this month.

Hmm, interesting question. I can't tell how the skimmer works. It says "venturi driven" and "dawn draft" (typo for down draft?). I'm not sure what you mean by using the return pump to drive it. Can you provide a diagram?

I took a gallon jug and timed the how long it took to fill up from the exhaust.

I plan to use my mag 9.5 pump to drive the skimmer. The pump will be in the sump and that feed up the skimmer[about 4-5 ft] which will be on a shelf above my tank. The flow out the skimmer will then feed into a spray bar in the main display.

Something like this in the picture but the output will just feed into a spray bar.

Does the level of the output (exhaust) determine the water level inside the skimmer?

looks like an aqua-c clone (spray-injected), not a downdraft.

flow through will depend entirely on the pump used.

looks like it has a rudimentary ball valve on the outlet to adjust. might be tough to get it just right.

i'm pretty sure its a venturi skimmer. The pump i plan on using is the mag 9.5.

Yup thats definitly a spray injection skimmer.

The flow feeding the spray bar is going to be very slow. The back pressure will effect the skimmer.

It will work just a slow flow I would think.

So the flow will be low even when pumping 700gph into this skimmer? If that is the case i won't use the spray bar. I was just going to use the spray bar to even out the flow.

Also i didn't think any other skimmer used the spray injection beside the aqua c.

the actual spray nozzle is probably just barely different enough to get around the aqua-c patent.

the nozzle itself puts a fair amount of head pressure on the pump (it's gotta spend pressure to get the differential that sucks air into it), so it's not going to be running anywhere near the full speed the pump does at that height. i would not restrict the outlet any.

Thats good to know since my overflow can only handle 600ghp.

Like Trick said, the back pressure will affect the skimmer. Skimmers aren't meant to be used like that. You should get a separate return.......i know, another bill dropped down the overflow : ) This hobby is expensive! Get a used one from the forum for 40-50

well the main point of this is to get the "cleanest" water into the main tank. I really don't need another skimmer for this tank since i have my aqua c remova.

I will just not use the spray bar.

Kb, what i was tryng to say is that if you use the skimmer as a return, i think it will be a bad idea......bad man. With that much head, your going to need a mop to clean up all those overflows on the floor. FWIW i run a mag 7 on my remora pro and pry get 150gph out of it.

what? How would this cause an overflow? The skimmer will be run off my return PUMP. Not the return.
