what is this

5 or 6 will turn into 5 or 6 hundred. I always pull them out. Found them eating sps too many times.

Yep. They are just little starfish that hitchhiked in on your live rock. They are perfectly safe.

Looks like an asterinid starfish. Some of them are algea eaters; others eat corals. I'd just leave it and watch for signs of trouble, but I like small stars.

They stay that size. They are asterina stars. They are considered a nuisance star by many, though evidence supporting their destruction of coral is anecdotal. If you are noticing them regularly, then you probably have a large population of them.

I dip incoming corals in iodine to kill them since they normally enter a system as hitchhikers on an incoming coral.

i would leave them until you see them doing damage. most people fear them because of a few reports of them eating corals. most of them are algae eaters, they can become a valuable part of the clean up crew. best of all they are free. i have around 50+ visible at all times, probably double that in total. they have never been a problem. but i only have one species.
