kodyboy I've got a typhoon coming in the mail that I bought off the used goods forum here at RC(hardly used)for $41 shipped. How long did yours take to break in?

I was looking at the instructions for it on the Dr Foster website and they say they don't recommend using it off the side of a sump. Any idea why not? My sump is small and this would work perfect to make more room for the refugium.

Here are excerpts from my correspondence with D & D Marine regarding using the Typhoon skimmer in the sump:

(19 Jan 07) pjf -> D&D Marine
"In the FAQ section of your website, you stated that you do not recommend hanging the Typhoon skimmer on an aquarium sump. Why is that?"

(19 Jan 07) D&D Marine -> pjf
"The problem is that the pump and the venturi are carefully matched so that the pump pressure is correct for the venturi bore. When you hang the unit on a sump you have to lower the pump on an extension into the bottom of the sump. This will change the head pressure on the pump lowering the pressure at the venturi. The venturi will not perform the same.

Unfortunately there is no proper way around it. Hang on's are a great inexpensive option, however the equipment designed to go under the tank is more complex and as such more expensive. But if you want to operate with the sump you have to make certain the equipment is designed to do that."

(19 Jan 07) pjf -> D&D Marine
"I built my sump with a normal water level in the skimmer compartment. When the Typhoon is hung on the sump, is it necessary to lower its pump to the bottom of the sump?"

(20 Jan 07) D&D Marine -> pjf
"Basically if the water is right up to the top of the frame as it would be in an Aquarium it should be ok. The return must also have the water level up to the top. If hanging it on your sump will give it the same relationship to the water as hanging it on a tank would then you should be ok. Just realize we have not done this type of testing and can not guarantee the outcome."

Mine only took a few days to break in, then skimmate started to collect.
Note: when you clean the skimmer take off the tube when you restart and then hook it back on when the water levels off, I have had siphons start with the tube hooked on and lots of water drain into my collection bucket.
I have also added an air-pump(whisper 40) to the air intake and it seemed to improve bubble production, but I have not quatntified that in any way.

I had mine working fine in a large tub for a few weeks while transfering fish from an old tank to a new one. As long as the pump was submergered it collected skimmate fine.

i have a d&d terminator 2 on one of my customers tanks, and i'd say it is on par with an asm g1+/g-2, but i havent gotten around to modding it yet because he also runs a g-3 and a DAS ex-2 in the same sump...lol.
i'll try to take some pics next time im there.
about my only complaint is that everytime i go to service the aquarium the skimmate outlet at the top is clogged with goo and has stopped air production, i need to get the customer cleaning it out every week!

Did you notice better skimmate with the air pump hooked up?

Maybe a larger output at the top of the skimmer would be helpful, or possibly some sort of air valve. At least its clogging with goo, that means it doing something

I have not noticed a huge amount of extra skimmate with the air hooked up, but I really need to clean everything out, run it for a few days without air, measure, then clean out, run for a few days with, measure and compare.

My Typhoon kicks a** with a luft pump attached to the venturi. The luft pump has a rheostat to adjust the air volume. I could easily fill a gallon jug with skimmate every day if I wanted to skim that wet. I'm working on building a floating surface skimmer. Hopefully I will be able to get good surface skimming at any water level.

I asked D&D marine and this was the response:

The pumps are manufactured to our specs to match the skimmer. They are not an off the shelf pump.
The pumps carry a branded label of Abio. ( some of them also had an Atman label). There are several factories that make pumps under many different labels on
an OEM basis for manufactures such as D & D Marine Enterprises.

My pump is not particullarly noisy or quiet on my typhoon, I would say it is average in noise level. Seems decent enough, and it is fairly small.

How about the microbubbles? is there lots of microbubbles getting into tank? The microbubbles from my corallife 65 skimmer really annoy me.
