Plumbing sump question
So I've decided to add an overflow (do not want to drill my tank) to my tank and put 20 gallon sump/fuge with it...
What, or where even, would be a good place to start seeing different plumbing designs? I've been looking around RC and haven't really seen any that were too helpful, given that I'm looking to incorporate an HOB overflow. Just kinda wondering what the best method would be to use this. Would it be ideal to have the overflow drain down into the Skimmer section of the sump, then have all the water flow through the fuge, out to the return lines? PS the tank is a 46 gal. bowfront. Been going for over a year now. |

You should reconsider not drilling your tank if it's an acrylic tank. I have a 135 gal. AGA un-drilled and there are a lot of options that I can't have. plus the site of my 2 overflow boxes against the wall. I had to add the 2nd box to handle my new return pump because it could not handle the volume of the pump. I didn't want to drill my glass tank because I don't know if the bottom glass is tempered or not, and you can't drill tempered glass. If you decide to do so CPR makes a good overflow box, and runs fairly quite. Buy one larger then you need. I have drilled acrylic tanks many times and it is not hard at all! The link below will take you to a web site that has many pics of plumbing. Just go to the forum named "Water Pix". Good luck.

Thanks Douglas. The tank is glass, not acrylic, if there was a way to drill the tank without having to remove all my h2o, rock, etc... then I would, but I don't want to risk it - lol.
So for now, I'll use a CPR or other box. Thanks!! |

Yes I know what you mean about having to empty it out to do so... A real pain. CPR's are good overflow boxes. They will not lose their siphion like the J tube ones can, which will over flow your tank from pumping from your sump tank. Also they are very quit. A little $$$ though. I paid 125.00 for each of mine (CS150's).
