14 gal. BioCube in need of updates

I have a 14 gallon BioCube and although it claims to be self containing I notice that a lot of people make modifications to the nano tanks.
Questions:
1. What are the best mods to make?
2. Do I need a skimmer?

I plan on doing a FOWLR tank and maybe an easy soft polyp of some sort, but not a reef tank.

Thanks!

I'd try in the nano forum for more ideas.

I'd probably skip the bio-balls and other biological filtration media, and use only carbon and live rock for filtration. Upgrading the circulation is another idea to consider. A small Mini-Jet pump might be a good addition. That's what I did for my 12g. A skimmer might be useful, but for small tanks, frequent water changes are likely enough.
