How do in-line pumps work?
I was wondering if the Quiet Ones pump on Drs. foster and smith .com would work for my 120 reef tank w/ sump. Also how would it be hooked up? If it isnt going to work what is a cost effective external pump and where on-line can i find one?

You place a submersible pump in the return section of your sump and have it return water to the main tank via PVC or flexible tubing. The Drs. also have OceanRunner pumps on sale and they are a better pump.

OK now I see you want an external pump, you didn't state that clearly. If you want external you need a drilled sump with a bulkhead and isolation valve to feed the pump from the sump and again PVC or flexible tubing back up to the display. You probably want something in the 750 to 1000 GPH range at 4 or 5 feet of head. I wouldn't recommend a Quiet One or the OceanRunner for that matter as an external return pump on a system that large. You need a fan cooled type external pump like an Iwaki or sililar. Much better pumps but also much more expensive.
