I had a MRC MR-1 and now have a Deltec APF600. I agree apples and oranges. IMO, the beckett pulls out more skimmate but you may get tired of constant tweaking like I did. Also, the pump was loud. Go Deltec, H&S, or some kind of needlewheel or meshwheel.

2. Well , water turnover rate , turbulence at the seperation point at the neck where the foam fractionization takes place , and construction all have a say in building an efficient skimmer design .
So the question is : which is a better skimmer, a deltec or a beckett ? Depends on the overall design and every manufacter has some good designs in their line up and some dogs !
Personally from my experience I would consider the large H&S pinwheel or the dual beckett from MTC !

1. I totally dispute this point. smallest bubble from air driven is not the case at all! Their are DIY NW type pumps that can make bubbles TOO SMALL for skimmer application. An Air driven skimmer would require a "LOT of pump" to create the same size bubble with the same air volume (virtually impossible for a home aquarium) to achive the bubble size of even a mesh wheel skimmer IMO.

2. agreed

I'm surprised about the comments saying the MRC needs lots of tuning. I've tuned mine maybe 3 times in 6 months. I also find cleaning becketts MUCH easier than cleaning needle/mesh wheel pumps.

skimmers

roland , I've owned a air driven skimmer for over 10 years and I"ve used The pump30 to drive it NO problem . I have also compared it to my very large H&S 450 external skimmer which uses 5 x eheim /pinwheel set up and although the H&S is certainly the better skimmer "hands down" the bubble size on my air driven skimmer was still a bit smaller. I have seen the bubble king in action and my air driven skimmer still produces a smaller bubble than it .
So other than the fact I have not seen a meshwheel skimmer in action yet , my point about air driven skimmers (smaller bubble size) still stands !
cheers
