How Big For The Qt?
Hi guys,
I'm setting up a 75G reef tank. How big do I need to go for my quarantine tank? Will my old 29 gallon be ok? I'm only planning on purchasing one fish at a time(except for an occelaris or percula pair), so there should only be 1 fish in the tank being quarantined at a time, and I'm not planning on any specimens over 3" adult size. Will the 29G be sufficient room for the livestock to live in for the needed 6-8 weeks???? also, what are you guys running for filtration in your QT tanks??? I was thinking of priming a sponge filter in my sump as advised in one of the reefkeeping articles. Does anyone else do that??? |

I think 29 gallons would definitly be okay. My quarantine is your standard 10 gallon walmart tank and everything's been fine; though, all of my fish are tiny and I only do one at a time.
As far as set up goes, I just use a sponge filter and a sponge that's been seeded in my sump. I also toss a few PVC joints in there and leave out all the sand and live rock. 6-8 weeks is on the high end isn't it? I've always heard 4-6 weeks, but I may have been doing it wrong all this time. Which parasite has a life cycle that long? |

Thaks for the responses! That helps a lot, and it certainly makes my life easier, since I have the tank at home already. I got the 6-8 week quarantine time frame from one of the reefkeeping articles about quarantine. It might have been a 2004, or maybe 2003 article... Better safe then sorry of course, but I'm sure it takes a LOT of patience to quarantine an animal that long!
Say, can anyone point me in the direction of a good diy diagram for plumbing your system from tank to sump and back. I'm a little nervous about trying this, and pictures help me a lot |
