turnover on 180 gallon

Hi guys,

I have a drilled 180 gallon tank. The overflows are rated at about 600 gallons per hour each. If I get an external pump to handle this, I'm only turning over the system about 10X per hour. How can increase the turnover?

I appreciate your response

I guess, the question is, if I use a sequence pump, such as a hammerhead and use a manifold to use the returns as my main curculation, will the overflows be able to handle it?

You should target 3 - 5x display volume via the return pump. A lot depends on how big the sump is and how it is configured.

A hammerhead is a 5800 GPH pump. WAY too big.

I think an Eheim 1262 would be good if you want to do an in sump pump. It will get you ~ 700 - 750 GPH which is ~ 4x turnover. It is extremely reliable and very quiet as well.

What do you like better about the Eheim pump versus the bigger mags?

WAY quieter for one. The large Mag pumps also need very large plumbing to get decent flow out of them which is often impractical. I dont see an application for a 1800GPH 150w submersible pump. If you wanted that much flow from a return pump (you dont), you should use an external.

The 1" lines are cutting the flow back a lot.

The eheim also uses alot less watts and run's at a lower heat. If you want some more circulation look into some powerheads or wavemakers. I'd suggest the hydor koralina 4's 2-4 of them. 1200gph each at 49.99-55 bux.

I read that 1"holes although rated at 600gph, actually do about 300-400gph "comfortably". In other words, quietly.

I run an eheim1262 on my 180 and this works perfect for me.
Dead silent and cool running, perfect flow.
Don't like mags either, loud and warm.
3-5x for sump, and add tunzes or koralias for good flow.

I use a mag 18 on my 180 with no noise or heating problems at all. I have two mj 1200 mods and a koralia 4 in the tank along with a closed loop running off of a mag 7 no problems with that mag either
