What filter for 65g?

I currently have a 65g AGA not RR. Right now I'm running a freedom filter on it which has the protein skimmer built into it. I would like to switch over to a regular filter, and protein skimmer. I would like to get a hang on power filter. I was looking at these two.

I was looking at this for a protein skimmer.

Any suggestions or opinions?

I'm assuming your tank is a fowlr? Anyway, if you have at least 1lb/gallon of live rock then a 'filter' isn't really necessary. Basically the live rock will serve as your biological filter. If you want one to run carbon, then do the Aquaclear. They are nice hob filters, imo. The Remora Pro is ok either with the drain or not. With the proper amount of live rock, a good skimmer, and enough flow in the tank you'll be fine.

Agree with drummereef. You will want to remove the sponge from the Aquaclear if you are using on a reef. The Aquaclear is also one of the better HOB's to use as a HOB fuge, if you decide to do that later.

Thanks!!! The tank has fish, an anemone, shrimp, snails, and hermits. Right now I dont have enough LR, but I am hoping to get some more soon. I really like the idea of using the Aquaclear as a hang on fuge in the future. Thanks for the help!!!!

Any other suggestions on the skimmer?

Can someone explain why you should take out the sponge or bioballs in a filter? I'm planning on running a Fluval and someone said to take out bioballs.

thanks.

Medias that are meant to grow nitrifying bacteria such as sponges, bioballs, etc. are very efficient at what they do. So efficient that they convert ammonia and nitrite to nitrite before a protein skimmer and live rock has a chance to do much work. So, using the previously mentioned media will result in higher nitrates in your aqaurium over time.

But wouldn't the sponge clean the water so that whatever ammonia is not converted can be converted by the live rock?
My assumption is that the live rock will have to do less work since the sponge has helped.
