ID red algea please
this stuff is growing like wildfire in my fuge. but i really don't like it. it can pretty much be peeled off like a mat with no kind of base to it.. i'd really like to put something down there that will eat it, it's really taking over...
any ideas??? TIA,,, lisa

Im thinking just about any tang would love that for a snack. Why don't you like it i think it would look nice in the fuge as long as its not sending spores into your display.

Looks like red graciliara. Tangs love that stuff they say (my tank is too small for a tang, so I can't verify that).

It doesnt look like a Gracilaria species to me just going by size and structure of the algae from what I can see in the photos. There are literally hundreds of candidate for the ID of what you've got. Most red algae are palatable to reef herbivores, including surgeonfishes, rabbitfishes and most of the reef snails we keep like mexican turbos, Astrae and such.
Try any one of these to help curtail the bloom of it in addition to hand harvesting. You could also try to outcompete this particular algae species by introducing and establishing another more desirable macroalgae such as Ulva or Chaetomorpha (two of the easiest). Good luck! >Sarah
