Flood!!!

Just a post to explain how dumb I am...

Do not adjust your skimmer than go to work without looking at how high your bubbles are popping!

I came home to a empty 40g sump and a waste collector overflowed and spilled all over the floor.

My skimmer must have went crazy after I did a small yet major adjustment to the air intake. I guess the air ran totaly open for the better portion of the day and drained the sump.

Luckly I have a fish room with a pitched floor and a drain. No harm but it could have been a mess. I was going to do a water change tonight anyway so I had the new water ready to go.

The waste collector I purchased with the auto shutoff mechanism was a great investment, FWIW, since my hardwood livingroom floor is neither pitched nor does it have a drain

I'm going to have to look into that...I still cant believe I did something so irresponsible.

Who makes the waste collector?

I got mine with my skimmer from MyReefCreations. I think most skimmer manufacturers make one. It basically has a tube vent at the top, with a plastice ball inside. As water rises, the ball floats. Eventually it hits the top of the vent, seals it, so the skimmer will siphon out, and no longer enter the collection cup. Really a nifty device.

I have my skimmer drain into a small container (about 4 cups) which is over my sump. If that ever happens to me, the water (although slightly dirty) goes right back into the sump. This has saved me countless times.
