I have heard very mixed reviews about Prizim Skimmers. Unless space is a major concern I think you can do better with a Venturi style skimmer or something like the Aqua C Remora. Just my 2 cents. Its better to buy a good skimmer upfront than to save a few dollars and wish you had something else.

Try this skimmer, Kodyboy brought it to my attention and has one that seems to really get some good skimmate.

The prism is below par and i would say the remora pro is just as good as the prism. I would suggest the typhoon or the ps160 from aquatraders. The ps160 will also work in your sump when you eventually build one.

I have used the prizm before and don't think they are any good. I have also used the Berlin classic and although they are better than the prizm, they are still not that good.

I am also looking for a good skimmer and filter for a new max 45 gallon tank set up. Does anyone have any idea?

What's everyones opinion on Lifereef? I have the vs2-24 on an 80g with 20g sump. Seems to work good but I don't have experience with anything else. How does it compare the some of the other popular choices?

The prism is not a good skimmer, had one, trashed it.
The typhoon is a decent HOB.
The ps160 works well, and can be either an HOB or in-sump unit. Never tried it as an HOB. I have pics in my gallery of the typhoon and ps160 and their skimmate. They are very small pics though
I have heard lifereef is good, but they seem really expensive for what they are.
