Anthelia Why - Page 2

I have a GSP question, and I as the thread starter I do not care if we go in that direction. What to do with GSP that will not come out. How many days must pass without the GSP coming out before it is time to panic? I had it coming out in a 23 gallon tank. I had to keep doing water changes to get it to come out daily. So I moved it into a 75 gallon. I know it needs time to adjust. I placed it on a sand bed as somebody here suggested that I do with the Anthelia. I am sure that if my mexican Turbo Snails, and small Hermits have not yet bumped the GSP that they inevitably will, which I am sure will cause it to retract. The guy who gave me the frag has a different set up than mine. Better lights. And a skimmer. I think this stuff might just be having a hard hard time adjusting to the way that I keep my tanks. Last night I did a huge water change. But I am done trying to help this stuff until Friday at least as far as water changes go.
Should I invest in some Mr. Sticky's underwater glue for my frags in order that I can put them in good spots? The GSP is on the tank bottom in the substrate.
What is the longest that anybody reading this has ever had GSP stay retracted for, but then come out, and be ok?
I was told by a fellow Reefer that when his tank wiped out his GSP came back.
I am not really worried. I am just seeking information. Thanks.

Hey all,
This came with the Anthelia. Maybe it too is Anthelia, but I do not know. It is like a stalk with like a button mushroom on the top. I am not saying that it is a mushroom. Just that It looks like a shroom. Is this Anthelia before the hands blossom out, or is it something else. I might try to get a better PIC, but I think if you know what it is you should be able to tell by looking at. Can anybody help me identify this?

Those look like some sort of paly to me.

looks like some type of zoanthus or palythoa more paly I think.

As for the GSP, the one I got in a frag swap did not show for at least 1- 1/2 weeks or so... now its fluffy as heck.... I have 2 types... the more rare one that each petal type has feathers on it and its neon green.

My Frag tank had no light in it. I thought it was empty. It had two styrofoam lids floating on top of the water almost covering the whole tank. Went to drain it yesterday, and found this......PIC....this stuff is doing better than that in my tank. Woke up this morning, stuff in tank is gone. Last night I took down some of the lights because I thought it might do better in low light as the stuff in the frag tank is doing. Not sure if that's what did it. I suspect that my Turbo snail mowed it, or maybe a larger hermit, but I do not know. I can't see why a few hours of less that normal light would make it disappear. I was going to keep the other in my frag tank. The water in there is colder, so if I move it I have to acclimate it. There is not flow in the frag tank either, so WOW. Here's the PIC. And SunFish LISA, when you got your new ballast did you move the Anthelia back into it's home tank?

This stuff takes WEEKS with no light to die off, I put some behind my rock work in the display tank where its dark, just to see how long it'd take to die off or move towards the light, going on 3 weeks now and its pretty much just long witherd stems with no head... I'm sure if I moved it back to the light it'd grow right back like nothing happened... I hate anthellia !

Ya' your good there man.. next thing you know.. its double or tripled in size... the pictures I sent you started off with only a couple of stems in 2 months... well you can see..

It's interesting. I don't, honestly, know why you're placing so much emphasis on having the anthelia in the substrate. I wonder how long that nice mound will be there since the flow in the tank will most likely erode it to nothing in a short time....I know that in my reef there'd be no hope for it. Anyway...anthelia definitely doesn't need to be in the substrate and I believe it doesn't even necessarily prefer it though I have no doubt it could thrive there. I use super glue gel to mount it to a flat rock and eventually...pretty quickly...it covers the rock up.

from what i have seen in my tank these things with take over. i had one on a piece of rock and now they pop up every where. make sure u keep them isolated or the will spead quickly

That's really true about them. Once you have a strong colony established in the tank, polyps will start growing in places not even near it. If you don't want that, you can scrape them off the rock at their base and descard them. Or, you can carefully remove them at their base by scraping them off the rock...gently...and super gluing the cartlidge-like base to a rock and they'll take easily and spread on the new rock from that.

Nope it's still in there with a pair of clowns, I had enough of it in the big tank already. I love the way the stuff looks blowing in the current but it is pretty invasive when it's happy.

That's the POINT of isolating it AVI.... to keep it from overtaking a tank... like mine I put my in the corner of the tank IN THE SAND so that if need may be I can prune easily instead of SCRAPPING of rocks. its the easy of things and if you have your powerhead set right you don't have to worry about sand being moved around your tank or blown all over the place.

How can I make this stuff spread, or how does it make itself spread? It is growing well, but I would like to get it on another rock...............to have at least two patches of it........I mean I want clumps of it. I guess I could snip a stalk, and super glue it to a rock, but I want more than one stalk on a rock. How long will it take to spread on it's own, and how long will it take to multiply if I snip a stalk, and glue it. And is Super Glueing it even OK?

once they start really multiplying on the sand.. they will start to adhere to clumps of sand.. of which you can super GEL glue the sand pieces with the anthellia to a rock... don't use a rubber band method...

Is it possible, and safe to Super Glue a finger thick 4-5" long piece of branch coral to a heavier rock for stability? Do I have to wait a certain amount of time to let the glue dry, and should I only use a certain amount of glue?
Will any type of Super Glue work, or are there brands that I need to watch out for (stay away from)?

super glue gel alone most likely won't be enough....Use an epoxy that's made for reef use, or use Aquamend that's sold at Home Depot and that'd do it. Use a dab of the super glue gel where the coral meets the super glue and the epoxy meets the rockwork.

I put a small piece in my tank as a starter frag and removed all of it (or so I thought). I saw one or two small polyps in the tank, so I left them alone. They are growing at an incredible rate; probably doubling in size every month. I am going to move one rock to the fuge where it can grow all it wants to, and the other is going to be cut off the rock (this stuff STINKS when it is cut!!)

I put my anthelia on the sand away from the rest of the LR and coral. It will burn other soft corals. And once they start spreading, they really spread.

I still have the Anthelia. It has been a few weeks now in it's current tank, and it's stems have become noticeably fatter. I take it this is a good sign?
