how old is the tank?

Do you have a refugium/sump set up?

How much do you feed?

Nitrate levels?Phosphate levels?

Lighting used/photoperiod used?

fyi, the hermits really arn't going to do much for algae. They opportunistic and will go for just about anything. Algae if no other food is present, but I bet they'll wind up going after left over food more than algae.

What type of snails do you have?

The best method for me, is to use a refugium stocked heavily with macro algae. but others have methods that are just as effective.

a little more info would be good to have like papgimp said... if it is a young tank and has not had enough time to develop coralline algae, you may have green algae for awhile, or maybe the nutrients are high in the tank... lots of possibilities....
