Royal Gramma Tramma
Royal Gramma Tramma
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Folks! I have a dilema regarding a small royal gramma I just introduced into my tank last evening. I realized my folly the moment the poor guy reached the bottom of the tank as my azure damsel and coral beauty immediately chased it into a small space between the rock and sand. This morning before the lights were on I noticed it exploring so I put some food in and it ate. However as the other fish woke up it was back to the harrassment. I realize now it may not have been wise to add one to my almost stocked tank. It will dart out and grab some food if it drifts by, but if the damsel sees it, wow it just darts at the gramma and the poor guy is back in its hole. I have a 120g with about 140lbs live rock. No way am I getting any fish out of there. Could I introduce a few more grammas, in helping to sort of keep the damsel too confused to do any damage (which works with my 5 chromis)? I also have a yellow tang, 2 clownfish and a scooter blenny. Thanks |

Give the other fish awhile and they will ignore it, new addition once the see it is not a threat and the new fish knows the pecking order of your tank. I put a small one in awhile ago and it hid all the time an d 6 months later it is swimming around being unnoticed by the others! My RG was 1 1/2 inches in size!

Grammas tend to hide in crevice and seldom come out anyways. He will become more territorially soon.

If it doesn't improve in a day or 2 try changing some of the rock work around - confuses the heck out of the older inhabitants and makes them feel like they are the new ones in the tank.

If he is eating, you have more than half of the battle won.
It will be fine. . . give it some time

Give it some time.
I have 2 of them in my 400. I think they have actually bred as one is always out in the open swimming and now the second one is rarely ever seen. They used to both always be out swimming. The hidding one is always in the rocks. may be tending eggs as he's so far deep in them I can't see. I started with 5 and they have wittled them selves down to just two. Even with five, they would school together for the most part with just one odd man out.

Well, I put 2 more grammas in the tank earlier in the day, one of which has taken residence about 20 cm from the first and the other is at the opposite end of the tank in amongst some dead coral branches resting on the sand. The two that are living close together have eaten well and seem to have confused the damsel (also due to a few rocks being rearranged). The other though has been unable to scoot out and grab food so far, as the coral beauty and yellow tank are closely guarding it . I will be closely watching the interaction of these fish over the coming days .
