hermits now? or later...
The last time (the first time) I did this it went so fast I was blinded.
This time I am using a 30 gallon cube with less LR per gallon to start and it is taking longer. The ammonia is zero. Is this the time to add some snails and hermits or do I need to wait for the nitrates to be zero as well? The reading is still purple but not as solid a purple. I suppose that is pretty high, but I thought I'd ask. |

I would wait until Nitrates are gone or very close to gone. The hermits might survive, but it's a gamble.
As I setup my new tank, I am going to keep crabs to a minimum (maybe 2) and do predominantly snails...Snails cause much fewer problems.

ok.
I have 4 hermits plus the little hitch hicker. I believe they should be happy. Plus the snails I have. I do have one of those larger snails. He may be too big. I might switch him for a smaller one. Though his shell has increased in my tank, I'm wondering how much calcium he absorbs from my tank. |

I wouldn't worry too much about the amount of calcium his shell will absorb. Regular water changes should keep params in check unless you have an SPS heavy tank..
