Brown Algae Problem
Yes, another tank another problem....I seem to stem across everyone....
Well I have had this 90 Gallon setup for approximately 4 months + now.....I have 80lbs baserock and 70lbs live rock....The sand is Carib sea and approx 2-3 inch deep.... I use Reef Crystals and have been doing water changes every 2-3 weeks. I have an Octopus NW 200, with a Titanium 4 Return (approx 1200gph), plus two SEIO 1100's on the SEIO controller, with a Fluval 404 that I use for my carbon. The tank has an external overflow that falls down into a sump with a refugium (sand bed approx 5inch deep with some macro and LR). I have been using a Seachem test kit with 0 Nitrite and Nitrate. I tested phosphate out on an average test kit with 0 reading (I know probably not an accurate reading) 0 for ammonia and PH is 8.1-8.2. Salinity checks out. The lighting on the tank is a Tek 5 8 bulb VHO, with 4 actinic and 4 bulbs ranging from 10k to 14k. The bulbs are all under 6 months of use. My light cycle is 4 actinic on around noon and off at 1200pm. My other lights are on at 2pm and off at 10pm. And last my temperature ranges from 78.5 to 80.5(on a high day). Inside the tank, I have one yellow tang, several cerith snails, nassaurus snails, 3 conches and several turbos and yes a clam (and appears to being doing well), several zoo frags plus lots and lots of brown algae....This algae appears to be a film and stringy....It is attached to the class, rocks, sand and everything..... I had thought the problem to be a tank cycle, but heck this stuff does not go away...if anyone has suggestions, please fire away.....also there is air bubbles attached to the algae...I believe it's from bursts of air that occasionally happens from the powerheads. Here is some pics... |

Definitely looks like dinoflagellates to me. Do you use RO/DI and do you know the tds?

I had it almost as bad as you. I had to leave for 8 weeks on business and reduced the lighting schedule and quit doing water changes. It was almost gone when I got back.
Recent posts suggest that a 3 day black out and no water changes seem to be working on this evil stuff...

Do you have good water movement? Also, I would cut back to eight hours lighting right away. How's your biodiversity? I would have some worms, including young pack of bristleworms, turbo snails - maybe six or so, 10-12 burrowing snails, an abalone and something like a seaweed blenny would do you a world of good.

Flow is good, approx 3200+gph, and I have approx 10 cerith, 10 nassarus, 3 conchs and approx 10 turbos... As for live stock, 3 peppermint shrimp, 1 yellow tang, clam and a couple frags...and thats about it....
