TDS REadings
My TDS, which has new batteries, but is 3 years old, reads 11. I just replaced all the media (sediment, carbon, and membrane). The membrane is now a "100 GPD", it was 60GPD.
Before I replced the media, the reading was 5. The flow from waste and product is right, so I know it is not bypassing the membrane. What gives? Could I need to recalibrate the meter? |

Did you measure the very first few gallons of H2O, or have you given it time to flush the new membrane? I beleive it's recommended to disgard the first 10 gallons or so.
Do you have a D.I. cartrige as well? |

100 gpd membranes don't reject nearly as much as 60 gpd membranes.

jerryreefrigger: I am only through the first 10 to 20 gallon batch. I do not have a DI.
rubikcube: I have noticed the rejection is less. which is nice. . .

One other question . . .is this water safe for the tank? Will it cause algae outbreaks? It seems like a huge waste to toss 20 gallons of water!

In most cases, if your tank is otherwise healthy and no current algae issues.........
It most likely would be fine to use. Long term though best to get a post DI on your RO unit. For water drinking systems, I'm sure 100gph membranes are fine but when wanting to obtain 0 TDS, really best to stick with a higher rejection rate membrane such as dow 75gpd filtmtec or the spectrapure hand tested ones. The higher TDS coming from your membrane means your DI replacement costs are going to go up .

So the 100GPD membrane with a lower rejection rate is causing the increased TDS?
Post DI will get the 10 to 0?

I just got the TDS calibration solution to see if my meter needs "recalibrating". Boy, what a PITA that was. . .the meter had me rip off the label to access the calibration dial; which did nothing!Buying a new one is easier in this case.
Either way, a post DI add on is on the way, so that will hopefully help the quality. Can anyone recommend a good meter?
