Take out the balls and pads (nitrate factories) and turn it into a fuge w/ macro algae.

I agree. The corals aren't going to like the bio-balls in about 3 months.

I definately agree with everyone, wet/dry filters are not friends with reef tanks. Also, what does he have in his canister filter? I'd take out any filter pads and bio media and just just use it for low with carbon and maybe some phosban.

Alright, He wants to make it into a fuge w/ macro algae.

So this wet-dry isnt safe with a reef?

If I may double post.. Why all the down play on sponge filters..
I know people say that they are nitrate factories because you
can "see" all that junk that gets cought in them. If you take them
out and clean them then you actually remove all those nitrates!!

Hasn't anyone ever used a turkey baster to blow off LR?? or taken
a piece of LR and shook it under water?? What happens?? you see
all that very same junk come off your LR and it floats around and
resettles on what?? on LR...

So, isn't it better that it gets cought in a sponge and then removed with
the sponge and then the sponge is cleaned and put back??

Oh wait no more junk floating around... Hmm

Isnt't it also true that they are so efficiant at ammonia and nitrite removal that the live rock and anerobic bacteria don't have time to convert the nitrate to nitrogen gas?
