They shouldnt do any harm but if you are worried you can always catch and dispose of some. Personally, i would leave them as most are beneficial and just cut back your feedings. There are so many because of excess nutrients most likely so if you cut down their food supply, they should die down to the correct amount for your tank.

Don't pick em up and pet them. I'm still pulling spines out of my hand from hitting a few during some fuge work. Not so much painful as it is annoying. Other than that, leave em be. They'll help keep the tank free of excess foods and stuff that accumulates. There also great for ridding a tank of dead matter when a fish dies.

they are not harmful, but if there is some outbreak of them in your tank, then perhaps they're getting some sort of food source!? excessive feeding? how often do you feed?

If needed, there are plenty of fish that would find 'em quite tasty. I have a six line wrasse that likes 'em.

They can only eat things that are dissolving or decaying.

Like Sk8r said, they are beneficial to the systems and won't harm a thing. Great cleaners.
