Murder in the aquarium

Catchy title huh?
I have either a Mantis or Pistol shrimp. It has killed every fish that has been put in the tank over the past two years.

The big question. Is there a good way of getting rid of it without breaking down the tank and soaking the rocks in fresh water?

I have lots of coral that will need a new home for a while if that is the only way.

Thanks all
Bert

I doubt it is a pistol shrimp. I had one that was mated with a Yellow watchman goby and the two never bothered anyone. I'm not familiar with mantis shrimp but I hear they are predators and attack fish while they sleep. I could and probably am be very wrong about the mantis!

Your best bet is to find out where it lives and do a manual extraction.

I know it is in the rocks in the very back of the tank. That is where the clicking is always comming from.

I have 200lbs of live rock to sift through.

O.K. this is totally mean and may be cruel, but higher iodine levels will kill them slowly by causing them to molt prematurly.

Not sure what amount is safe for corals.

there are mantis traps, Good Luck.

Other then that, it's some rubbermaids a few heaters and a few powerheads

Iodine is highly toxic to everything in the tank...

Mantis are pretty smart guys, you could try a red flashlight and see if you can find his "home rock".

As you have no fish in the tank, he must be feeding on something right? What is it living on?
can you set a fish trap for him? If the only food around is in the trap, he has to get it or starve

I took a 16 fl oz water bottle and cut the top down and inverted it and placed something to make it sink and some food in there and I caught the mantis shrimp in like 2 days. It costs you nothing and I can confirm it works. Keep changing your bait everyday to keep the bait from rotting and ruining your water quality.

If you can pinpoint the exact rock he is in, the f/w dip is the easiest way to get them out. Stalk it at night with a flashlight. My husband had 10 in this tank. We tried trapping them, but they must have figured us out from the start because they never got near it.

Not all mantis hunt at night. I've had 2 and they both closed themselves up at night. Can you take out the piece of rock you think it's in and put in your refugium? Maybe don't feed the tank for a couple days and put a nice piece of krill in a trap or something to see just what it is.

I would say the trap is the best bet if you have alot of rock and coral. I got lucky cause I had to remove just about all of my rock on Sunday to get an unruly fish out and after I put one of my large rocks on the plastic sheet out plopped a huge mantis, ugly suckers, so I gave him to a guy at the LFS that wanted him. I did hear a cracking sound, sounded like wood cracking..thought it was my canopy. LOL

I would feel safer going with the trap.

if it kills all your fish whats in there? if it's just corals why not stop feeding your tank anything but phyto? at least for a little while that'll starve him and make him more likely to take the bottle trap.
