my fairly new tank has something that looks like saw dust what is it and what do i need to do?

This is a normal stage of an early tank (cyano.) How old exacly is your tank?

Quite normal. Give it a bit of time and it will all go away. As soon as you test the water and you get no Nitrates and phosphates then you can try adding some cleanup crews. Snails, hermits.
