LR question
Ok, so I'm in the stages of planning my first tank, WOOHOO. My question is this. A friend of mine has around 30lbs of LR sitting in a bucket with water circulating. It's pretty good quality rock, never been in a tank. Can I buy some dry rock from say marcorocks.com and put it with his rock and have his rock inhabit my dry rock? I'm not sure how this whole process works because his has nothing but saltwater with it right now. I'm assuming he can still have all of the goodies living in the rock since he has it in saltwater. Is this a correct assumption? Thanks for the help.

good quality LR is the one that has been in a tank for very long time. were did he get the LR. because if it was only base rock, sitting in a bucket with circulation it won't have more than just algae.
you can mix base rock with Lr and eventually the base rock will be populated by the bacteria living in the live rock. but you have to be shure that what he has is LR. and since it han't been in a tank before. were the rock was collected?

if you buy base rock from reeferrocks or marcorocks and seed it with liverock (add them together in the tank) the base rock will become Live rock after a few months or so.

just fyi, not all dry rock is BASE rock, base rock does not contain the same porosity that other rock does, and therefore is not as effective for biofiltering purposes. If you are wanting dry rock to seed and use if for filtering, avoid rock labeled as BASE ROCK and find more porous stuff. If you just want it for aquascaping purposes and aesthetics, than sure, it's all good to use both live rock and dry base rock. be sure to follow normal rinsing procedures and whatnot as you would any new purshases going in the tank.

Hopefully I'll be able to answer these questions correctly. He purchased the rock from liveaquaria.com:
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/s...cfm?pCatId=393 He told me that it was LR and he seemed very happy with it. The first batch of LR was from the LFS and he told me that he liked this LR much better. So, given that convo, I'm assuming that it is, in fact, LR and not base. I was planning on getting something like the fiji base rock from marcorocks. From what I've read people seem to be pleased with the fiji. Not necessarily from that specific website, but something along those lines. Something that will allow me to be creative when aquascaping. So if his rock is indeed LR, sound like a good combo? -Az |

yup, should work just fine. and even if most hitchikers are gone from it already, the rock will seed throughout your entire time with the tank. Any new frag or rock that goes in can potentially bring something new to the tank, other than the coral or rock in question.

I got my dry rock from Marcorocks and it's incredible. It's definitely not what anyone would consider "base" rock. I've only seen great reviews from the people who ordered it. And yes, seeding the dry rock with some live rock is a good combo. Takes 2-3 months to see some coraline action, and you definitely don't want to rush stocking fish or anything, but worked well for me so far. (29G w/ marcorocks seeded with nothing but a pound of live sand, and I'm just starting to get coraline action nearing the 2 month mark, had a pod explosion for the past month) |

Ok, so last question. So I'm planning on buying in stages when the money is available. Can I go ahead and purchase the dry rock and let it sit around. It's not going to hurt it to just hang out in my garage right?

Just wanted to add an experience from Live Aquaria. Being the first switch to saltwater, I found the Reef Guide on their website. Just received 35lbs of Lalo Rock and 22 lbs of Fiji Premium. I was jipped by fedex on the shipping and it arrived after 3 days. Suprisingly the rock was still in pretty good shape with lots of growth, corlaine algae, clams, polyps, and signs of tube worms and feather dusters. The rock has been curing for a week and most of the growth has died off. The down fall is that you don't know what shape you are going to get and how many pieces. You may need to break some of it up. I had a piece of Lalo that was about 20lbs itself. Overall I hope that I haven't lost too much and the rock turns out as expected. I don't regret purchasing online from Live Aquaria, I would only suggest spending the extra 10 bucks for the overnight shipping. Chances of less die off... Sorry to make it so long and boring, Good luck all
