temp. regulating
hello all...i have 125 gallon fowlr...i have a mag pump inside my sump connected to a pentair filtration set up. this pump creates a lot of heat needless to say. so yesterday in the heat the tank shot up to 86 deg. then i went out bought a small fan and ran it across the water... woke up and water was 80 and fish looked like crap. what can i do to regulate the temp without a chiler? thanks

If the temperature remains stable after the addition of the fan, it should be fine. The fish could be looking poorly because of the high temp to begin with, or the rapid downward swing of the temp, or for some totally unrelated reasons.
Keep the fan on, and see where the temperature stabilizes IMO.. keep your room a consistant temperature. Also you can put your fan on a timer to run synchronized with your lights so that you don't have a large downspike at night. Other than that, you can get a temperature controller, and plug your fan(s) into that. |

Until I got my chiller I used a clip on fan over the sump and a 4" fan in each end of the canopy. Afetr watching temps for a few days I found by leaving on canopy fan on 24/7, the other on a timer with the lights and the clip on about the same my temps stayed pretty constant at 81. It was trial and error but worked out well for me. The part I didn't like was the evaporation, it was up to 6 gallons every other day! Now with the chiller set at 80 +/-1 degree and the two fans in the canopy on a timer with the lights I evaporate 5 to 6 gallons every 4 days.

I had the same problem your best choices are a ranco dual temp control which is cheap or a neptune aqua digital jr to control the temp
